It's not surprising that war has been one of the most frequently occurring subjects of movies throughout cinematic history. After all, man has been waging war since the beginning of time.
if you want to now the best war movies in history by votes of internauts is "Apocalypse Now" F.Coppoli

Enemy at the gate. Look past some of the soppy crap they threw in and it was a great film.
Some good films in the list. Never got Apocalypse Now. Never really enjoyed it as a film.

It's hard to say as I haven't seen many of the movies on the list. Two movies that aren't on the list that could potentially make it are the Dirty Dozen and Von Ryan's Express. I'm sure I could think of more but those will do for now.

In my opinion the best war movie of all time ''The Siege of Fire base Gloria'', and ''The Green berets''. Neither of which made your list. In order to have a superb war movie one of two things need to be present... John Wayne, or Marines.. ''Sands of Iwo Jima'' and "The Flying Leathernecks'' are two movies that contain both. They both are good movies.. but Fire base Gloria just captures the true essence of Marines, and even though the ''Green Berets'' is an army movie.. I put them at the top. But hey thats just MHO. On the list.. I voted for ''When we were soldiers'' -=DD=-

I just saw Heartbreak Ridge tonight in its entirety. Wow, Clint Eastwood is not to be messed with. I think that's the kind of Marine every Marine dreams of being. Good movie too.

im a "where eagles dare" and "force ten from navarone" fan, but any war movie is a good war movie. i voted for "the longest day."

I saw a little bit of force ten from navarone the other night, but turned it off after they blew through the whole guns of navarone story in 5 minutes... it was like a 2 minute recap on some NBC show. Not cool..

This is a great line up. I can't pick just one as a best war movie. I was so intrigued by Enemy at The Gate, Black Hawk Down, Band of Brothers, Flags of Our Fathers, Pearl Harbor and Bridge Over The River Kwai. These movies were based on true events of war. And for those who survived are truly our heroes.
