To get the most out of this game, you will need to enjoy reading. Not saying that you can't play this game if you don't, you can certainly just go around and kill things/people, but to really maximize the experience, you will need to read up on things and communicate with the thousands of other players on your server.
Before you even start the game, you will want to know what race and class you want to be as well as what type of game you want to play (PVP vs PVE). Learn about that here:

Once you get your character going, you will need to learn some other stuff like how to use all the available features in the game...banks, auction houses, chat options, travel, parties and questing...etc...

Once you get to level 10 and pick your proffessions, you will really start getting into the game more...for learning about different gear, items, quests and what not, I've found this site to be extremely valuable.

Another good one for where to be to get the most experience points while you are leveling.

You also might want to start customizing the interface (look) of your game. The best site I've found for add ons is:
www.curse-gaming.com/mod.php
You can really, I mean, really have fun with the addons, I've probably got about 25 mods going right now. And they are all legal (not hacks). You can assign macros or scripts to buttons you create and so on....
Oh yeah, once you actually understand how the game works, start watching some videos so you can really understand...

And also read up on your race/class and stay in touch with the people playing on your server (realm). You can even learn more about scripting, or about the professions you have chosen.
